Sign-Off recorded Summer 1989
Page updated and modified Saturday, 15 August 2020
This Channel 36 sign-off clip was recorded several months after the 1988 clip featured here. By this time, Channel 36 had a new transmitter site and had boosted its output power to the legal maxinum of five million watts. The station promoted the increase in power using the slogan "Coming In Proud and Clear", as seen in the bumper promo for Family Ties that precedes the sign-off. The sign-off itself features scenes of Charlotteans at work and play accompanied by North Carolina native James Taylor's tune "Carolina In My Mind". Within a few months of this recording, Channel 36 would be sold to the Providence Journal Company, and its call letters became the current WCNC-TV on September 3, 1989. Three more changes in owners followed after this. WCNC-TV is currenly owned by Tegna, Inc., the former Gannett broadcast division which also owns Greensboro's WFMY News 2.
