Sign-Off and local SSB recorded Fall 1987

Page updated and modified Saturday, 29 August 2020

This is among the very first sign-offs that the Webmaster recorded using his first VCR, a two-head Emerson VHS purchased in early 1986. The SSB is locally produced and features Piedmont Airlines planes arriving at and taking off from Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro (Two years later, Piedmont Airlines would merge with US Air to form US Airways, which merged with American Airlines in 2015). This same SSB video was used in the 1988 WGHPiedmont sign-off linked below.

WGHP-TV came to life on 14 October 1963 as the Piedmont Triad's first full-time ABC station since the demise of Winston-Salem's WTOB-TV 26 in mid-1957. In fact, WGHP's founders were the ones that owned the old Channel 26, Southern Broadcast Company, who were joined by the owners of another defunct 1950s NC UHF station, Raleigh's WNAO-TV 28. WGHP remained with ABC until 1995, when the Fox Network purchased Channel 8 along with several other major-city VHF outlets in the U.S. as a means to strenghten is ability to compete with the other three networks. Fox would sell the station to Local TV LLC in July 2008. WGHP Fox 8 is currently owned by Nexstar Media Group
