Inaugural Sign-On & Dedication Address
Wednesday, 22 December 1971
Page modified Sunday, 9 August 2020
The people of the Alaskan Interior received an early Christmas present from the University of Alaska in the launch of KUAC-TV, Alaska's first educational/public TV station. The video commences with a standard sign-on announcement with static station ID slide. From there it goes to KUAC-TV's inaugural address delivered by Dr. William Ransom Wood, the president of the University at the time, who gives thanks to the numerous individuals that brought KUAC-TV to frutition and offers viewers holiday wishes.
In its first years of operation, KUAC-TV was on the air only from 5 to 10 PM local time, due in part to the difficulties of delivering Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) programming to Alaska. As that situation improved, Channel 9 increased its broadcast hours accordingly. From 1995 to 2012 KUAC-TV was the flagship station of the AlaskaOne network (now Alaska Public Television with KAKM Channel 7 in Anchorage as its flagship).
