Farewell Analog Sign-off - Friday, 12 June 2009
Page created Friday, 11 June 2021
Twin Cities Public Television (TPT), known on-air today as Twin Cities PBS, ended its analog telecasting activities at 9:00 AM local time with this piece. The honor of bidding farewell to analog TV is given to Bill Schrankler, whose face was the first to be seen over KTCA Channel 2 when it inaugurated operations in September 1957. A vintage video clip has him hosting a show called Exploring Science, which was Channel 2's initial program offering. The last image seen before the picture goes to black is and an ancient KTCA station ID from channel 2's early years. The final two minutes is a mixture of static, a signal from another Channel 2 somewhere or other and a blue "No Signal" graphic. Channel 2's companion station, KTCI-TV Channel 17, also licensed to St. Paul, was launched in May 1965.
