Page modified Wednesday, 10 June 2020
The video starts with the final moments of an ABC News special on The Gulf War, hosted by Peter Jennings. After several spots for ABC News war-related programs comes the KAPP sign-off, which features some outdoor views including the station transmitter, tower and studio building. The SSB film which follows if from the U.S. Air Force, starring the USAF's Blue Angels Squad. A graphic listing KAPP's studio-transmitter and intercity relay links is displayed before the signal is shut down. Apologies in advance for the low audio volume, especially during the SSB.
KAPP-TV commenced telecasting on Monday, 21 September 1970 as Yakima's exclusive ABC network affiliate. Among the ABC programs to air on KAPP's first day was the series premeire of Monday Night Football (which has since been moved to ESPN). Before KAPP, Yakima viewers saw ABC programming either on KIMA-TV 29 (CBS) or KNDO Channel 23 (NBC). KAPP was one of few U.S. TV stations to sign off every night, a practice that ended in 2012 when KAPP began running ABC's World News Now in the overnight hours. KAPP is still owned by Apple Valley Broadcasting, a part of Morgan Murphy Media.
