KTUL-TV Channel 8, Tulsa OK
Sign-Off from 18 February 1979

One of the earliest TV station sign-off recordings circulating on the Web. It begins with the NAB Seal of Good Practice and the sign-off announcement accompanied by Henry Mancini's recording of "Dreamsville". Following that is a station-produced "America The Beautiful" film using the fabulous rendition recorded by the late Ray Charles. My apologies for the quality of the clip, for it was taken from a low-quality RealMedia file featured on the Tulsa TV Memories site.

KTHI-TV 11 (now KVLY)
Fargo/Grand Forks ND
Sign-Off from 14 October 1983

The sign-off announcement features only a static graphic of a view of the Red River of the North, where the cities of Fargo and Grand Forks are situated, with the station's logo superimposed on it. The National Anthem film was presumably prepared by the North Dakota Air National Guard, for there is a scene in which some servicemen are marching from the entrance of a building bearing that name.

KDLT-TV 5, Mitchell/Sioux Falls
SD Sign-Off from 1993

The clip commences with two PSA spots and a KDLT promo featuring Willard Scott of NBC's Today and KDLT weatherman Dave Frazier. The station's sign-off consists of various view of Sioux Fall at night, which is followed by the SSB. After that, several seconds of tone and color bars with KDLT's six translator stations superimposed upon them. My apologies for the out-of-sync audio in the clip, for it was that way when I downloaded it from YouTube.

KOLN-TV 10 and KGIN-TV 11
Grand Island, Nebraska
Sign-On from 1999

The clip begins with several seconds of the 10-11 logo ID with tone. After that, the sign-on starts with a wintertime shot of the State Capital building in Lincoln, and then to scenes of animals and Nebraskans at work and play. If this sign-on had a SSB clip accompanying it, it apparently wasn't included in the recording of this donated clip.

WEBMASTER'S NOTE: My "hats-off" to Matt Sittel of Belleview, Nebraska for contributing this clip. Matt is a radio and TV "Station I.D." enthusiast, and has a website with many hundreds of MP3 clips of station ID's from all over North America. Visit his site: http://www.mcsittel.com/

KOLN-TV 10 and KGIN-TV 11
Grand Island, Nebraska
Sign-Off from June 2004

This sign-off has the Star Spangled Banner sequence BEFORE the stations' sign-off announcement. The SSB clip here was obviously produced after September 11, 2001, for there's video of the New York City skyline at night with the two blue searchlights aimed straight up, signifying where the World Trade Center stood. From the SSB its on to the sign-off announcement, which starts with shots of the 10-11 studio facilities, then to various shots of Nebraskans at work and play. Apparently, the ownership of the two stations had changed in the five years since the 1999 KOLN-KGIN sign-on clip posted above.

WEBMASTER'S NOTE: Many thanks to Dan O'Hara of Syracuse, NY for contributing this clip as well as the KHAS-TV and KSNB-KTVG clips below.

KHAS-TV 5, Hastings, Nebraska
Sign-Off from June 2004

The sign-off announcement here is what I would call a "drive-by sign-off", for it is very brief . It is followed by a film produced by the United States Marine Corps featuring the U.S. Marine Corps Hymn. The film fetures vintage images of the Marine Corps in action in past wars as well as footage of the modern Marine Corps at work defending the USA. The webmaster's brother Ricky served as a U.S. Marine from his graduation from high-school in 1977 to his untimely death in an auto accident in February 1984.

KSNB-TV 4, Superior NE and
KTVG 17, Grand Island NE
Sign-On from June 2004

My apologies for the somewhat fuzzy recording as well as the few places where the picture "freezes", for that's how I received the clip. The sign-on announcement is a rather slick computer-generated piece. Some time back I acquired a sign-on clip of KPWB-TV 23 in Des Moines, Iowa, owned by the same folks that own KSNB-KTVG, Pappas Telecasting, that is styled very similar to this. The SSB sequence after the sign-on was apparently produced by the Pappas people, for the first few seconds of it also appears on the aforementioned KPWB-TV clip.

KXJB-TV 4, Valley City/Fargo ND
Sign-Off from 2006

The video starts with a brief "Thanks For Watching KX4" by KX4 newsman Mike Morken. Then it's the station sign-off announcement, starting with a very slick computer-animated KX4 logo leading in to various views of farm life which includes barns, animals, a tractor and a windmill. After that, a live shot of South Fargo with live audio from the local NOAA-NWS Weather Radio station WXK-42.

KVLY-TV 11, Fargo ND
Sign-Off from 2006

The sign-off of Fargo's NBC affiliate is delivered by KVLY-TV General Manager Charley Johnson and features video of the KVLY-TV mast, currently the tallest structure on land on the planet standing at 2,063 feet (628.8 m). The SSB tape, featuring Sandi Patti's rendition, was produced by the American Legion and the Citizen's Flag Alliance. This SSB was also used in the sign-off of WECT-TV 6 in Wilmington NC in the late 1980s, which can be viewed on this page.
