| It's the end of another broadcast day in 1980 for Detroit's long-time ABC affliliate. ABC itself put the station on the air away back in 1948 and until 1986 was one of the five original ABC O&O stations (all on Channel 7). ABC sold WXYZ-TV to the E.W. Scripps Company, the founder and licensee of another long-time ABC affiliate WEWS-TV 5, in 1986. WXYZ-TV is still affiliated with ABC, but almost became a CBS affiliate at one point during the mid-1990s. This sign-off is preceded by a brief promo for the following day's 4:00 Movie (which leads me to believe this clip was recorded on a weekend). It is followed by a PSA produded by Religion In American Life and the Ad Council sponsored by The Interfaith Broadcasting Commision of Greater Detroit. The sign-off announcement follows, a static "Circle 7" logo with the call letters inside the circle, exactly the one employed by the other ABC O&O's at the time (see the 1978 sign-off for KABC-TV). The SSB film is one of many produced by the U.S. Air Force, this one employs the split-screen method of showing two moving images at once with the U.S. flag sitting stationary in the middle of the screen throughout the film. |
