|Two sign-offs of Wilmington's long-tome ABC
network station, recorded off-cable by the Webmaster during
vacation stays on Topsail Island NC, 30 miles northeast of
Wilmington. WWAY-TV underwent
numerous turnovers in ownership in the 1980s and 1990s.
In the 1989 WWAY sign-off, the station's
owner was Adams Television; in the June 1993 sign-off, the licensee of
Channel 3 was Sterling TV of Wilmington. By the summer of
1995, the ownership had changed twice, as noted in the
two sign-offs on this page. WWAY's current owner is
Morris Multimedia, which acquired the station from Raycom
Media in 2006.
The visuals of the two sign-offs here are exactly the same, featuring still images of Wilmington, including the U.S.S. North Carolina, a World War II battleship which is docked at the Cape Fear River (the station's sign-on used this very same montage). The same announcer renders both sign-offs which mentions the twenty-plus intercity relays and remote pickup units noted in the 1989 and 1993 sign-offs. Only the station's ownership differs; in March 1995 it was CLG Media of Wilmington, in June Hillside Broadcasting of North Carolina was Channel 3's new proprietors.
