WWAY-TV Channel 3, Wilmington, North Carolina
Sign-Off and Color Bars recorded June 1993

Page modified Friday, 28 August 2020

Another variation of Wilmington's ABC station's sign-off, this one recorded off-cable during one of the Webmaster's vacations to Topsail Island/Surf City NC, about 35 miles northeast of Wilmington. This version uses a new announcer and video footage of the Wilmington area and the Cape Fear River. The station's ownership has changed as well (WWAY changed hands numerous times in its history - the current owner is Morris Multimedia). As with the 1989 and 1995 sign-offs linked below, the announcer recites the twenty-plus intercity relay stations and remote pickup units employed by the station. There's a brief view of the WWAY-TV color bars before the carrier is cut. At that moment, a different Channel 3 appears airing the All-News Channel. The Webmaster guesses that this was either WBTV in Charlotte or WTKR in Norfolk VA, the Channel 3s closest to Wilmington.

WWAY-TV 3 was the last of the Wilmington stations to sign-off each night. It was doing so as late as mid-2005 with very slickly-produced sign-off and sign-on, which the Webmaster regrets being unable to record at the time. By May 2006, when he returned to Topsail Island hoping to get a recording, the station had finally went to 24-7 operation. The Webmaster also has no memory of WWAY ever using any patrotic film with their sign-offs.
