WWAY-TV Channel 3, Wilmington, North Carolina
Sign-Off and Colr Bars recorded Summer 1989

Page modified Friday, 28 August 2020

Another long-distance sign-off recorded by the Webmaster in the summer of 1989 from his home near Winston-Salem NC, 200-plus miles from Wilmington. This explains the fuzziness and unsteadiness of the video. Amazingly, the color signal does not disappear at any point. A WWAY PSA promoting the Yahweh Center children's home leads off. The sign-off itself follows, featuring various still images of the Wilmington area and the Cape Fear River. The sign-off announcement makes mention of twenty-plus intercity relay stations and remote pickup units, certainly a mouthful for any announcer (the two clips linked below also mentions these).

WWAY-TV 3 is Wilmington's ABC network affiliate, and has been such since the station commenced telecasting in October 1964, ten years after long-time NBC station WECT Channel 6 first signed on. In January 2017 WWAY became Wilmington's home for CBS network programs (on WWAY DT2) when the previous CBS affiliate, WILM-LD Channel 10, went independent. WWAY DT3 is where Wilmingtonians tune to to see programs of The CW network.
