recorded Summer 1989

Sign-off of the Triangle area's ABC Owned-and-operated station. The sign-off is preceded by the "Moments With..." sermonette and a "America Responds to AIDS" PSA. The sermonette is delivered by Stanley McClamb, pastor of the Greater Felton Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Apex, NC (he was still pastor of the church as of September 2019). After the sign-off announcement comes a U.S. Air Force "Aim High America" film, but this version features a choral rendition of the Air Force Hymm instead of the Star Spangled Banner.
Known today simply as ABC 11, WTVD (We're TeleVision for Durham) made its air premiere on 2nd September 1954 as a primary NBC affiliate. It was a joint venture of the Durham Herald-Sun Newspapers, owners of WDNC radio, and Floyd Fletcher and Harmon Duncan, the then-owners of WTIK radio. In 1957 they sold the station to Albany, New York-based Hudson Valley Broadcasting Company, owners of WCDA-TV (now WTEN), to form Capital Cities Television Corporation (later Capital Cities Communications). That same year WTVD took on a primary affiliation with CBS, which lasted until 1985. Nineteen Eighty-five was the year Capital Cities stunned the U.S. broadcasting industry by buying the ABC network, sending CBS over to the former ABC station, WRAL-TV Channel 5. Eleven years later in 1996, Capital Cities/ABC itself would be bought out by The Walt Disney Company.
