A late Sunday night Channel 5 sign-off that's similar to the 1989 WRAL sign-off, but has a different announcer doing it (WRAL-TV's longtime announcer and weatherman Bob DeBardelaben had retired in 1989). This version utilizes an animated station ID graphic and omits mention of the station's operating power and studio-to-transmitter link (STL) used in previous WRAL sign-offs. As with WRAL's sign-offs and sign-ons of previous years, the "Flag Evolution" SSB film is used which is the personal favorite SSB film of the curator of TV-Signoffs.com.

WRAL-TV is still owned by Capital Broadcasting Company, which put Channel 5 on the air back in December 1956, making it one of few commercial TV stations in the U.S. to be still owned by its original licensee. WRAL made TV history in July 1996 when it became the first U.S. station to experimentally telecast in high-definition digital (as WRAL-HD on UHF channel 32). On 29 June 2016, WRAL acheived another U.S. first, as it began experimentally telecasting in ultra-high definition digital (2160p ATSC 3:0) on UHF Channel 39 (WRAL-EX).
