Scenes of the St. Joseph River, which runs by South Bend and Elkhart, is featured in this nice sign-off from the Michiana area's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member station. Befort WNIT-TV took to the air in February 1974, some PBS programs were aired over some of Michiana's commercial outlets. WNIT-TV went completely to digital TV transmission a year before all other stations in the U.S. did. In March 2008, the major signal amplifiers in the Channel 34 analog transmitter failed, resulting in Channel 34 going dark (its digital transmission, using a separate transmitter, was not affected). With all analog telecasting in the U.S. slated to cease in early 2009, WNIT-TV decided not to bother fixing the old analog transmitter and just broadcast only in digital.
