Western New York State's PBS Public TV station's sign-off here is pretty basic: a station ID slide with announcer delivering the station ownership and technical stats. What separates this one from many other U.S. TV station closedowns is that it features both the U.S. and Canadian National Anthems, an acknowlegment of WNED-TV's many viewers in Southern Ontario and the city of Toronto, which also accounts for about half of WNED-TV's financial support.
Channel 17 begin life in 1953 as commercial station WBUF-TV. From 1955 to 1959 it was owned and operated by the NBC network as an experiment in UHF broadcasting. Unable to make the station a financial success, NBC took WBUF-TV off the air in September 1958 and donated the license and some of its equipment to Channel 17's current owner, the Western New York Public Broadcasting Association. From its re-activation in 1959 to 2000, Channel 17, rechristened as WNED-TV, operated as a non-commercial station on the original commercial license it inherited from NBC.
