WJHL-TV Channel 11, Johnson City, Tennessee
Sign-Off and Sign-On recorded circa 1988

Page modified Thursday, 2 July 2020

WJHL-TV is Eastern Tennessee's second commercial TV station after WATE-TV 6 in Knoxville. It would have been the first to go on the air had not been for a catastrope involving their transmitting antenna (it collapsed a few weeks before their initial sign-on date). WJHL-TV has been The Tri-Cities area CBS affiliate since day one (26 October 1953).

It is not known whether the clips featured in this combined video were recorded the same morning or not (the Webmaster assumes they may have been). The sign-off is preceded by the tail-end of CBS Late Night and an Eyewitness News 11 Update, and is followed by the first twenty seconds of the SSB video. Ten seconds of color bars is seen before the sign-on. Both the sign-off and sign-on features video of the mountains in the east Tennessee area.

This recording was contributed by Matt Sittel, who was residing in Kingsport at the time he made this fine quality clip. Matt, who currently resides in Belleview, Nebraska, is a radio and TV "Station I.D." enthusiast who at one time had his own website that featured many MP3 clips of station ID's from all over North America.
