WJHL-TV Channel 11, Johnson City, Tennessee
Devotions, News, Sign-Off and SSB
recorded circa late Summer 1984

Page modified Sunday, 31 May 2020

The video presented here is about eight and one-half minutes in length. It begins during the final seconds of The CBS Late Movie. Immediately after comes Devotions, a pre-recorded sermonette delivered by United Methodist minister Rev. Jack Pickering. The opening and closing ID slide looks rather dated (possibly from the 1960s?) and has numerous specks in it.. Following the mini-sermon comes the Night Owl News, presented on-camera by a newsman who does not bother to identify himself. Coming quickly after this is the WJHL-TV sign-off announcement, rendered by Claude Wood. The video displays a nearby lighted highway at late-evening with most of the sign-off's text scrolling upward. The "Aim High America" SSB film of the U.S. Air Force comes right after the sign-off. The SSB is abruptly cut short toward the end by a split-second of color bars, then the power is shut off.

WJHL-TV is the Tri-Cities Kingsport/Johnson City/ Bristol) area's CBS-TV network affiliate and has been such since its inaugural sign-on in October 1953. In February 2016 WJHL-DT2 (subchannel 11.2) became the ABC network station for the Tri-Cities, replacing WKPT Channel 19, which affiliated with MyNetwork TV. Channel 11 previously had a secondary affiliation with ABC from 1953 to 1969, the year that WKPT began operations.
