WHIO-TV Channel 7, Dayton, Ohio
Weather and Sign-Off recorded Summer 1978

Page modified Wednesday, 1 July 2020

An ancient sign-off from the Miami Valley's longtime CBS network station. It is preceded by several minutes of the weather report from the encore presentation of that night's 11 PM edition of NewsCenter 7. Along with the standard mention of ownership and technical stats, the sign-off also makes mention of WHIO-TV's sister AM and FM radio stations, in which Channel 7's night-owl viewers are invited to tune in to.

Although WLWD Channel 5 (today's WDTN Channel 2) was the first to be granted a construction permit by the FCC in April 1947, WHIO-TV was the first TV station to commence operations on Channel 13 in February 1949 (WLWD signed on a month later). In 1952 both WHIO-TV and WLWD were moved to their current channel numbers as a result of a massive reallocation of Midwestern U.S. channel assignments by the FCC. WHIO-TV is owned by the Cox Media Group, its original licensee who still owns and operates the AM and FM sister stations mentioned in the clip. Channel 7 has been affiliated with the CBS network since its inception.

Apologies in advance for the quality of the clip, for it was encoded from a RealMedia file that appeared originally on Dave Reilly's TVDX Detriot site, which is no longer online.
