Page modified Saturday, 13 June 2020
WCET Channel 48, Cincinnati Educational Television, first signed on the air 26 July 1954. The following year the Federal Communications Commission granted the station the first-ever non-commercial educational TV license in the United States. WCET was not the first non-commercial ETV station on the air, however: that honor goes to Houston's KUHT Channel 8, which began telecasting in May 1953.
In this pre-recorded sign-off we're treated to an assortment of switches, buttons, meters and plugs pertaining to TV broadcast equipment used by WCET. There's also scenes of microwave and satellite dishes used by the station. Following the sign-off come a WCET-produced America The Beautiful film, featuring views of downtown Cincinnati and the Ohio River. The old Riverfront Stadium, the then-current home of Major League Baseball's Reds and NFL Football's Bengals, is seen in at least two scenes (it was demolshed in 2002).
