KRON-TV Channel 4, San Francisco, California
Sign-Off recorded 25 January 1986

Page modified Friday, 3 July 2020

From its inception in 1949 to the end of 2001, KRON-TV was the Bay Area's NBC affilliate station. The relationship between NBC and Channel 4 was not always harmonious, however, resulting in a parting of the ways after NBC was outbid in its attempt to purchase KRON-TV in 2001. Channel 4 operated as an independent for a few years before becoming an affiliate with MyNetworkTV. In April 2010 KRON-TV became an informal secondary affiliate of NBC, carrying NBC programs that are pre-empted by NBC's O&O station KNTV Channel 11 when it telecasts San Francisco Giants baseball and other special programs.

The KRON-TV 4 sign-off features the "Meditation" inspirational film (missing the first thirty seconds of it here), featuring scenes of nature and maritime settings. The sign-off announcement is rather brief, but features the Channel 4 logo design that was inspired by San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. In the 3-D animated video, the 4 multiplies itself to form a likeness of the bridge. This is followed by the SSB, the same film used by WNBC-TV 4 in New York for many years. Sadly, this recording is plagued by heavy damage of the VHS tape from whence this recording came from.
