KQTV "KQ2", Saint Joseph, Missouri
Sign-Off recorded Tuesday, 21 July 2015

Page modified Sunday, 31 May 2020

This sign-off clip of St. Joseph's ABC network station was submitted by Ruel Jefferies of St. Joseph. He recorded this by aiming his camcorder or webcam at his HDTV screen while the sign-off was playing. Despite the second-hand means of recording, this clip is proof positive that as late as 2015 there were still a few U.S. TV stations that continued to sign off every night of the week. In the case of KQTV "KQ2", it signed off every night around 1:35 AM local time and resumed telecasting at 5 AM. KQ2 has since joined the 24/7 universe, airing ABC's overnight news on weeknights and various and sundry offerings on weekends.

The sign-off is twenty-rwo seconds long and mentions KQTV's owners, frequency and studio & tramsmitter location. Three different static station ID graphics are use in this clip, each bearing KQTV's slogan "That's My Station".

KQ2 commenced telecasting in September 1953 under the callsign KFEQ-TV. The station has experienced numerous changes in ownership over its 60-plus year history. From 1955 to 1969 it was owned by Heartland Broadcasting, which was headed by singer-actor Bing Crosby. When Crosby sold Channel 2 in 1969, the KQTV calls were adopted by the new owners. The year after this video was recorded, Nexstar Broadcasting Group, KQ2's owner mentioned in the sign-off, sold the station to its current licensee, Heartland Media.
