KEPR-TV Channel 19, Sign-off clip of the CBS network affiliate of Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick, Washington. The clip begins with a Junior Achievement PSA featuring the late Dinah Shore and the late President Ronald Reagan. The sign-off announcement follows this and employs computer-generated animation resembling frames of film. The SSB fils is one produced by the U.S. Army National Guard and features a piano rendition of the National Anthem. |

KXLY-TV Channel
4, Spokane This is certainly a favorite of the webmaster, for it features the 1965 version of the NAB's Seal of Good Practice. The presence of it suggests that this sign-off clip was created some years before this recording of it was made. The SSB film is one by the United States Navy, the same used by WJZ-TV 13 (Baltimore) and WCSC-TV 5 (Charleston, SC). |
KHQ-TV Channel 6, Spokane WA Sign-off of "Q-6", Spokane's first television station. After a brief portion of a program promo, we see the U.S. Navy Hymn film, similar to that used by KNBC-TV 4 in Los Angeles earlier in the decade. The Q-6 sign-off features goings-on in the station's control room, including a cleaning lady mopping the floor. Then it's the SSB film featuring the U.S. Army Band. Immediately after that, we see the guy at master control leave and put out the lights as staff announcer Ron Harris bids the viewers good night. |

KHQ-TV Channel 6, Spokane WA Apparently, it was around this time that Q-6 trashed its earlier sign-off tape (featured above) and replaced it with a new one. This ones features various video shots of downtown Spokane. This clip also has a new locally-produced SSB sequence, using a mixed chorus, and a few video shots of Mount Spokane. |
KOMO-TV Channel 4, Seattle A very brief sign-off of Seattle's long-time ABC Network affiliate, running only about thirty seconds in length. Just a shot of the Seattle skyline at night, then several seconds of black before the transmitter is cut off. |
KCTS Channel 9,
Seattle WA Sign-off of Seattle's public television station that also serves portions of British Columbia, Canada. The clip is a montage of shots of downtown Seattle (including the famous Space Needle), and video clips from various KCTS and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) programs. To top it off, via the miracle of computer animation, we see scattered pieces of the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) Color Bars coming together to form the whole graphic. |
KAYU-TV Channel 28, Spokane WA Sign-Off from late summer 1987 The clip commences with a brief program promo for The Twilight Zone (the newer version, not the original 1960s show). The sign-off portrays a man chilling out in his recliner watching TV (presumably channel 28). Realizing its time to turn in, he gets off the recliner, lets his dog outdoors, staggers off to the bedroom, and puts out the light. To the webmaster, this sign-off is slightly reminicent of sign-on and sign-off clips used by WDBJ-TV 7 in Roanoke, Virginia in the late 1970s, when I was in high school. I would certainly love to find video of those clips! |
KSPS-TV Channel 7, Spokane WA Sign-Off circa late 1980s The SPS in the station's call letters stand for Spokane Public Schools, which has owned and operated Channel 7 since its initial sign-on in 1967. This sign-off clips feaures numerous shots of snow and ice-covered trees. This PBS affiliate station's signal is also seen by viewers in British Columbia and Alberta in Canada, as well as the signals of at least four other Spokane TV stations. |
KSTW-TV Channel 11, Tacoma WA Sign-Off and Sign-On from 2004 Sign-off and sign-on combined in one clip. Both used the same video of scenes of Seattle and Tacoma, which includes Seattle's famous Space Needle and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. At the time of this clip, this bridge, opened in 1950, carried traffic in both directions. It now carries westbound traffic, for a new eastbound bridge was opened in July of 2007 after five years of construction. There is no patriotic film used in these clips. KSTW-TV is now affiliated with the CW Network. |
KREM-TV Channel 2, Spokane WA Sign-Off from 2006 Starts out with a brief promo of the Seattle Seahawks Coaches Show, then on to the sign-off announcement which features a still pic of a sunset with the station logo at the bottom. From there it goes to the Star Spangled Banner tape, which features breathtaking areial videography of Spokane and vicinity. |
NOTE: The video files featured on this website are taken from my VHS home recordings of over-the-air and cable video captures, and from clips contributed by others. The quality varies from clip to clip, due to TV reception and recording issues. None of the clips that are featured here have been authorized by the various television stations, networks or any other entity.
